Youth fall to late strike

Brisbane Roar have been denied a share of the spoils in the National Youth League encounter with Adelaide United after the Reds scored a late winner to secure a 2-1 result at Goodwin Park.

After Antony Schiavo cancelled out Francesco Monterosso-s 15th minute opener, the Roar survived a late onslaught from United before finally succumbing to a goal from Evan Kostopoulos in the 84th minute.

The home team were lucky not to go behind in the opening minutes, when an Adelaide corner caused a scramble in the area which resulted in the ball ricocheting off the far post.

Alistair Quinn then tested Reds ‘keeper Mark Birighitti with a close-range volley at the far post from Luke Brattan-s cross, but the Young Socceroos gloveman kept the effort out with his feet.

Monterosso put the visitors ahead with a tap-in after Matt Acton-s flying stop to deny Joseph Wright fell at the feet of the Adelaide hit-man.

Brattan came close to an equaliser soon after, watching his curling effort from outside the box deflect narrowly wide before Isaka Cernak set up a good chance for Quinn.

The Queensland Academy of Sport product collected a low cross from the right and turned his defender sharply before firing wide.

The hosts found their equaliser five minutes into the second half, when Schiavo raced onto a through ball from Stefan Vrbesic and blasted the ball confidently past the outrushing Birighitti.

But Adelaide hit back and put their opponents under the pump for much of the second period, going close on a number of occasions.

Brisbane skipper Daniel Bowles was called on to make a goal-line clearance from Brett Rayner, after the substitute had squeezed a shot past Acton in the 66th minute.

Kostopoulos then went close, sliding in to meet Monterosso-s centre and putting the ball just past the post, before Brattan-s long-range volley narrowly went wide at the other end.

Jordan Farina pulled off another goal-line clearance seven minutes from time when Cernak inadvertently deflected an Inseob Shin corner goalwards, but a minute later Adelaide finally found a way through.

Another Shin corner was cleared by the Roar defence but the ball was bombed back into the area, allowing Rayner to nod the ball down for Kostopoulos to score.
