Young Roar staying focused

Our Young Roar aren’t letting their lofty placing on the Foxtel Y-League Conference A table distract them from Sunday’s clash against Melbourne Victory at Lions FC Stadium (10:30am KO).

The Roar find themselves three points clear at the summit of Conference A with three matches to play.

Young Roar Head Coach Drew Sherman says that whilst he and his side recognise their position on top, they all remain focused on their own play.

“It’s natural for the players to have a look at the table, but it’s not their main focus,” Sherman said.

“We obviously want our players aspiring to win games, but we have to stay grounded and make sure we are focusing on working on our own structures and implementing those on a game-to-game basis.”

With their build up of strong momentum, the Young Roar’s status as the league’s hunted team provides a learning opportunity for the youthful side.

“It puts a degree of pressure on but that’s what happens when players are learning to win,” Sherman stated.

“It’s an excellent learning experience for them to handle that type of pressure. It’s a good thing because they’ve put themselves in that position where they’ve performed well and got the results they deserved.”

This will be the first meeting this season between the Young Roar and Victory, who sit at opposite ends of the Conference A ladder.

Despite the difference on the table, Sherman admits that having his squad switched on is key this Sunday with the Christmas break squarely on the horizon.

“It’s so important that they just focus on Sunday and make sure that they can continue the form they’ve had to date,” Sherman added.

“We have to remember that they’re still young boys and they’ll have time off as well to rest, recover and refresh for the new year after Sunday.”

Sunday’s Round 7 Foxtel Y-League fixture will be the is the Young Roar’s final home game of the season, and last game until after the Christmas break when they play Adelaide United Youth on January 19. Entry is free.
