WWL Match Report, BRIvNEW, 29 November

Brisbane Roar Women will look to their next match for improvement after a 4-0 defeat to Newcastle Jets Women in Round 7 of the Westfield W-League at AJ Kelly Field at Kippa-ring today.

With five regular Starting XI players unavailable through international duty and a suspension, it was always going to be a tough match for the Roar Women.

And the home side were on the back-foot early in humid and hot conditions as they conceded a goal after just 21 minutes following a miscommunication in defence.

The new line-up, which included a host of youngsters, refused to be rattled and there were moments of brilliance from the attacking players as they linked with each other and made menacing crosses into the box.

However, indecision on the ball and wasted chances denied the Roar Women an early equaliser.

As the match wore on, it became more evident that key players were missed and a patched-up defence struggled at times under constant pressure from Jets players Caprice Dydasco and Rhali Dobson and their surging runs down the flanks.

While younger members of the squad stepped up to fill important roles within the Starting XI – and there were moments whenthey stood out – the lack of  fluency in the team started to show as Newcastle took greater control of the game.

While patches of the first half saw Brisbane play with confidence and dominance, the Roar Women faded in the heat of the second half and defensive structures began to break down which allowed the Jets to run away with the match.

While the final 4-0 scoreline suggested a lop-sided match, it wasn't.

he defensive efforts by the Roar Women's Angela Beard and Alisha Foote did not go unnoticed as they helped Brisbane regroup after going two down and provided service to ensure the forwards had chances in the 18-yard box.

The scoreline also didn't show that the Roar Women had a number of chances in front of goal, from free-kicks to perfectly placed crosses, but the ball did not find the back of the net, despite their best efforts.

There were moments of dominance by Brisbane Roar Women when they strung passes together and worked off the momentum of each other, but the lack of intensity, urgency and accuracy in front of goal cost them in the end.

Talking point

Brisbane Roar were missing five of the starting XI players from their squad for the match because of international duty and suspension. That's tough for any squad to overcome.

“We just need some points now,.it’s all good and well if were playing alright but we need to convert that into some points.”

Brisbane Roar Women coach Belinda Wilson: “It was disappointing all round. There were things we worked on during training and we were aware of what they were capable of doing.

“The execution is the key thing that lets us down, along with our decision making on and off the ball.”

What's next
