Former back-to-back World Surf League Women’s World Champion Tyler Wright will switch her surfboard for some football boots on Saturday, taking the field in the BRFC Legends Charity Match.

In support of Rural Aid, Wright will join a long list of former Brisbane Roar players, including a number of Hall of Fame members, in the curtain raiser to the Brisbane Roar’s Round 15 match against Wellington Phoenix.

It might’ve been a while since she’s taken the football field, but Wright couldn’t be more excited to be doing so in support of bushfire relief.

“I haven’t played in a very long time. I’m almost 26 now so it’d be 12 years since I last played,” Wright said.

“I absolutely loved it & really missed it when I stopped playing.

“It’s really incredible that they’re doing this – it’s a great cause and something really close to home being from the area.

“I know my brother’s best mate is going to come up & watch. He watches football and is really excited about some of the players playing which is cool.”

Wright seemed excited about her unorthodox preparation for the upcoming year, even if it’s just for one night.

With surfing being such an individual sport, she can’t wait to compete in a team environment for the first time since she was young.

“That team environment is the biggest thing I’ve missed since I was young. I’m trying to recreate it a little now with my coach.

“It’s great having things like people travelling with you, having dinner together – I think the team environment is really healthy and it’ll be cool to be around that environment.

“My year doesn’t start for another month or so, so I guess that will be a bit of pre-season training.”

Wright will join a host of former Roar players including Matt McKay, Matt Smith, Michael Theo & Henrique on the pitch against an NPL QLD Select outfit.

The BRFC Legends Charity Match kicks-off at 2:10pm local time, before the Roar face the Phoenix at 4:00pm.
