After meeting this afternoon, Brisbane Roar can confirm an approach has been made for its captain Matt Smith from a Thai First Division club.

The Hyundai A-League Champions are now awaiting a formal offer from the Thai club.

Club chairman Chris Fong said the Roar did not want to lose its captain, who still has 18 months remaining on his contract.

“Matt has expressed the view to the club that he believes this possible move is in his best interests at this stage of his playing career,’’ Fong said.

“Brisbane Roar will await a formal offer from the club and will then consider Matt’s request.’’

English-born Smith joined the Roar ahead of the 2010/11 season and was named captain of the club in August 2012.

He has been a part of the Roar’s three Hyundai A-League Grand Final wins (2011, 2012 and 2014) and two Premiers’ Plate (2010/11 and 2013/14). He has played more than 100 times for the Roar.
