Roar Women soar to top of the league

Brisbane Roar will sit atop the Westfield W-League ladder on Christmas Day after a Round 8 victory against Melbourne City at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The two sides were unable to break the deadlock in the opening hour before the Roar finished with a flurry to seal the three points.

Within two minutes of being thrown into the action, lightning-fast Allira Toby latched on to an impeccably-placed through ball from Clare Polkinghorne before looping Lydia Williams from distance to open the scoring.

An explosive free kick delivered by Katrina Gorry then gave the Roar Women a two-goal lead in the 72nd minute.

Head coach Mel Andreatta was pleased with her side's ability to bounce back from a disappointing result last round.

"Today our leaders stepped up and we wanted to write the wrong from last week. They showed a calmness and positivity and led by example," Andreatta said.

“We are pleased to be at the top of the table. It's a nice thing to achieve and now it's about taking each week as it comes. We won't relax, we will continue to work on our game and areas we need to strengthen."

The Roar Women's next challenge is against Perth Glory at Dorrien Gardens on Friday, December 29 (9pm KO QLD time).

“We are looking forward to play Perth. I know we will be ready to rise to the challenge and work hard," Andreatta continued.

  • Neither side were able to find the net in the first half with Clare Polkinghorne patrolling a rock-solid Roar defence.
  • Celeste Boureille was influential further afield in the middle of the park, starting a number of forays forward for her side.
  • Two goals 11 minutes apart had Brisbane helped take control of the contest in the second half, with Boureille coming close to netting her first Westfield W-League goal in stoppage time.
  • The result takes the Roar Women to the top of the table, two points clear of Perth Glory and the Newcastle Jets.
