Roar Women ready for crucial home clash

For just the second time in 2020, our Roar Women are back on home turf, hosting Canberra United in a crucial match at Lions Stadium.

The two sides met early on in the season, with the Roar travelling to the nation’s capital and returning with all three points.

With the Roar in the hunt for a third-straight finals berth, midfielder Katrina Gorry, who returns to the squad following a one-match suspension, says everyone is back each other to play their role on Sunday.

“Finals are on the line but at the end of the day we have full belief in our squad and our players,” Gorry said.

“If we play at our best and believe in the processes, we’ll get through and get the win against Canberra.”

Head Coach Jake Goodship echoed Gorry’s comments, describing the game as a “must-win” for our Roar Women.

“We never look beyond the game coming up, we’ve got to build as they come,” Goodship said after training on Friday.

“It’s a massive game this weekend. If we have any hopes of playing finals, every game is a must-win.”

The Roar are hoping to bounce back from a disappointing result away to the Glory last weekend. Goodship’s squad fell desperately short of a miraculous comeback, but there were positives to take from the clash.

“They started on the front foot and we’re 3-0 down. But our response to that from the 35th to 95th minute was great so we’re going into the game now with a little bit of confidence.

“In the second half we deserved to score three, four goals.

“But we’re looking like a good team and we do create these chances so there’s nothing to be concerned about. We’re going to create chances again on Sunday, but we’re hopeful of now putting them to bed.”

Goodship is expecting a tough match from Canberra, as they look to finish their season on a high.

“We’ve got some big players in our squad who will step up, they like the big occasions.

“But we’re expecting them to give Heather [Garriock] a send-off, it’s her last game. We’re not expecting an easy game at all.”
