Roar Women primed to take on defending champions

Brisbane Roar Women return to Suncorp Stadium this Sunday (3:30pm KO) to take on two-time defending Westfield W-League champions Melbourne City FC in a blockbuster top-four showdown.

After a disappointing result against Newcastle Jets in Round 7, Brisbane's Westfield W-League side are determined to put in a strong performance in front of their home fans as they continue to challenge for top stop.

The Roar are locked in a three-way tie at the summit with Perth Glory and Newcastle Jets, trailing the pair on goal difference alone.

With no stone left unturned on the training pitch this week, Head Coach Mel Andreatta is confident her side will make the most of their opportunities this week.

"The team are hungry to improve and we know it's important to take our chances if we want to continue to be successful this season,” Andreatta said.

"We have worked hard and focusing on being effective with our possession in training this week and I'm sure that will be taken out on the pitch.”

Westfield Matilda Emily Gielnik was influential in her first start of the season and will be looking to terrorise the City defence on Sunday.

The Roar’s star-studded line up, which includes six Australian internationals, has enjoyed a fierce rivalry with City in recent seasons and will be determined to get one-up on a fellow title contender.

Australia’s two best goalkeepers in Westfield Matildas’ teammates Mackenzie Arnold and Lydia Williams will both play key roles for their sides in Sunday’s important clash.

Arnold has anchored a back four that boasts the most clean sheets through the opening half of Westfield W-League season 10.

Andreatta is adamant that her talented squad has what it takes to challenge the best teams in the league.

"The players are excited by the opportunity to play at Suncorp Stadium. I'm sure the girls are keen to improve on last week’s performance in front of the Roar Corps and our home fans,” Andreatta continued.
