Our Roar Women are back on the training pitch in preparation for the Westfield W-League 2019/20 season with pre-season commencing at the Club’s City of Logan training base on Monday morning.

New Head Coach Jake Goodship took charge of his first session with his new side and says he is delighted with what he saw from his troops.

“It was a fantastic first session. The girls were excited, keen and eager to train hard, it went really well – a good first day back,” Goodship said.

“Obviously the girls are out to impress with a new set of eyes and staff around them, they want to improve as well and build on the foundations they had previously.

“We’ve got five weeks of good pre-season ahead, with good intensity and we’ve got a good schedule ahead of us. We’re ready to hit the ground running.”

The Roar has so far confirmed 12 players for the Club’s Westfield W-League squad, headlined by Westfield Matildas Mackenzie Arnold, Katrina Gorry and the return of all-time leading goalscorer Tameka Yallop.

Goodship says the experience of the national team members within his squad could prove invaluable for the season ahead.

“It’s fantastic for the Club, it’s exciting for the fans and also the players around them because that’s where everyone wants to be,” Goodship continued.

“It’s the pinnacle of the game, you want to play at a World Cup or the Olympics next year so to have that experience and that calibre of players around can only help us.”

Goodship added he is pleased with the balance of youth and experience within his Westfield W-League squad.

“We’ve got some exceptional experienced players in our squad as well as plenty of young, hungry players with a desire to improve, it’s a good mix, they’re fantastic role models to have,” he added.

“For players like Hollie Palmer – it’s her third season – so they’re experienced players, they know what it’s all about.

“Hopefully they can put their foot in the door and claim a stake for a starting position as well. They’ll be trusted because they’ve had that experience as well,” Goodship said.
