Brisbane Roar-s trailblazing promotion of talented youngsters has paid dividends with the selection of three players to represent Australia at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup later this month.
Tommy Oar, Luke DeVere and Mitch Nichols were today named in the 21-man squad for the Egypt-hosted tournament, with Isaka Cernak and Roar Youth midfielder Luke Brattan selected on standby.
After missing the Young Socceroos- latest tour to South America with a quadriceps strain, Oar said he was excited to rejoin the squad which will be tested against the best young players on the planet.
“Everyone dreams of going to the World Cup so I-m just looking forward to it,” the 17-year-old said.
“I thought I trained pretty well at the previous tours so I wasn-t really getting my hopes up about it but I was fairly optimistic about getting in the squad.”
The nimble left winger said after reaching the semi-final of last year-s U-19 Asian Cup, he was hopeful of a successful run on the world stage.
“We-ve got a pretty good squad I think,” he said. “There-s a lot of depth and we-re optimistic about how we can go.
“We-ve just got to try to get to the next phase if possible, past the group stage and see where that takes us.”
Young Socceroos coach Jan Versleijen said the tournament could be a defining moment for many of the players in the squad.
“I can speak on behalf of the whole team that we are very excited to compete at the highest level against the best in the world,” the Dutchman said.
“For any player to represent their country at a World Cup is a special experience and they can make their career if they perform well.”
The selected Roar players will be available for this weekend-s match in Newcastle, before jetting to Cyprus for a training camp on Monday, which will include warm-up matches against Trinidad and Tobago, England and the USA.
The Young Socceroos kick off the group stage of the tournament against the Czech Republic on September 27, before facing Costa Rica and Brazil.
