Roar sunk by Mariners

Brisbane Roar Youth have lost their National Youth League clash with the Central Coast Mariners 2-1.

Brisbane Roar Youth have lost their National Youth League clash with the Central Coast Mariners 2-1.

Both sides boasted plenty of Hyundai A-League experience in their ranks for the Ballymore Stadium clash, with the away side also fielding former Socceroo Ahmad Elrich.

Neither side took immediate control of the game as the teams tested each other in the breezy conditions.

Matt Acton was the first goalkeeper called into action on 20 minutes when he smothered an Elrich effort from just inside the box.

Five minutes later the rain came down, slicking up an already lightning quick Ballymore Stadium surface

Acton was in action again a short time later when was forced to tip a mishit Elrich cross over the bar.

Daniel Bowles then scored one of the strangest own goals seen in a long time, when he struck a backpass towards Acton from just inside his own half.

However, with the damp surface the ball skipped off the turf and past Acton on the edge of the box.

Despite a desperate attempted clearance from the goalkeeper the Mariners took a one goal lead.

Holding the lead at half time the away side attacked the second stanza with vigour, as Panni Nikas lashed the first chance of the half just over the bar.

Tim Smits then had an opportunity to draw the home side level when he and Josh McVey tried to work around a goalkeeping error by Andrew Redmayne but from the edge of the six yard box he hit his shot over the bar.

Brad Porter then went close to doubling the lead when a ball across the box fell invitingly at his feet, but he curled his shot wide of the post.

Brisbane would be next to find the back of the net though with Smits drawing the home side level after 66 minutes.

Matt Mundy made a strong run down the left and knocked a clever ball to Smits at the top of the box.

The striker took his time on the shot and curled it inside the far post.

Acton had to be on his toes just three minutes later when Porter found himself free in the box, but the young keeper made a strong save with his feet.

However the young keeper could do little about the Mariner-s winner on 85 minutes.

Nicholas Fitzgerald hit a stinging shot which Acton saved well, but the rebound fell to David Gullo and the substituted buried the ball in the corner of the goal.
