Brisbane Roar defender Jake McGing says his side can’t wait to test themselves against defending Hyundai A-League Champions Sydney FC in Wednesday’s FFA Cup Round of 32 clash.

The Roar are set for their first competitive hit-out under new Head Coach Robbie Fowler against the Sky Blues at Leichhardt Oval.

The defender, who is one 13 new signings in a new-look Brisbane Roar squad, says his side are gelling nicely with over a month of pre-season now under their belt.

“For any new player, if you’ve got a few new boys around you it always helps. In terms of the boys from last year as well, they’ve been really good to the new players that’ve come in and helped us settle well,” McGing said.

“With all the games so far that we’ve played, we’ve been moving the ball well, attacking and defending well so it’s good signs going into the Sydney game,” McGing said.

The Roar has three pre-season matches under their belt so far, securing victories over Redlands United, Brisbane City & Football Central Queensland Select – scoring 18 goals and holding three clean sheets in the process.

The 25-year-old says the main focus over the past month has been preparing for their match up with Sydney FC.

“That is what our focus has been since day one in this pre-season really. We’re definitely looking forward to that game and looking forward to a really competitive match,” McGing continued.

“You always play for these big games and we’re really excited to play a quality team like Sydney FC,” McGing said.

A born-and-bred Sydney-sider, who spent time at Western Sydney Wanderers, the Central Coast Mariners and Marconi during his youth, Wednesday’s match provides a great chance for the new Roar defender to play in front of a number of familiar faces.

“All my family is still there [Sydney]. It’ll be good to see them again, they’ll be at the game on Wednesday so it’ll be good to catch up with them as well.”
