Roar put six past Perth

Brisbane Roar have shown their dominance in the Westfield W-League by crushing third-placed Perth Glory 6-0 in a commanding display at Ballymore Stadium.

Ellen Beaumont and Lana Harch each bagged a brace, with Courtney Beutel also finding the back of the net.

Despite missing midfield regulars Tameka Butt and Lauren Colthorpe through injury, the Roar were showing no signs of instability and had the first chance of the game through Beaumont, on her starting debut.

While her first minute run towards goal was shut down by Glory defenders, her quick header off the resultant corner bounced unluckily off the crossbar.

However, the Roar were ahead after eight minutes when a cross found striker Lana Harch on the edge of the box.

Last season-s Westfield W-League Player of the Year, Harch twisted past the Glory-s Collette McCallum and smashed the ball straight into the roof of the net for her first goal of the season.

Buoyed by the goal, the Roar were hungry for more and the next chance fell to Elise Kellond-Knight, whose left-foot volley from distance was caught by Glory shot-stopper Emma Wirkus.

Five minutes later the Roar doubled their lead when Wirkus spilled a cross from Kate McShea, Beutel was quickest to react tapping the ball into the back of the net.

The momentum continued two minutes later, when a miss-hit from Beutel fell to the feet of Beaumont, the striker making no mistake from eight yards to make it 3-0 after just 21 minutes.

Roar skipper Clare Polkinghorne was amongst the action as well, her curving free kick before the break forcing a magnificent diving save from Wirkus.

The second half started much like the first, the Roar putting the early pressure on their cross-country opponents and again it was Harch who found the back of the net first.

A ball from across the park found her just inside the box and she calmly slid the ball under Wirkus to increase the Roar-s goal tally to four.

With the game almost certainly won, Roar coach Jeff Hopkins had the luxury of introducing Sasha McDonnell and Leah Curtis into the game, the latter making her Westfield W-League debut.

A minute later, Hopkins replaced two-goal hero Harch with Jenna Tristam, making her home game return almost a year to the day after tearing her ACL against Canberra United last season.

The changes only boosted the Roar further and Beaumont grabbed her second goal after beating numerous defenders before putting a sweet left-footed strike into the Glory goal ten minutes from time.

But the Roar weren-t done and substitute Sasha McDonnell rounded off the win in injury time with a spectacular shot inside the box, bringing the final score to 6-0, the biggest in the Westfield W-League this season.

Westfield Player of the Match Elise Kellond-Knight said despite the score-line, the game was a stern test for her team.

“It was a tough game, conditions were hard and it was very hot out there.

“It was good to finally get some goals together, the last few games have been low scoring so it was good to get a few in today.”

Kellond-Knight was already looking forward to next Saturday-s clash with Canberra.

“Next week we-re playing Canberra and we-re treating every game as a must-win and we won-t be taking our foot off the pedal that-s for sure”.
