Roar go down to defending champions

Brisbane Roar has gone down against defending champions Sydney FC in Monday night's Round 15 clash at Suncorp Stadium.

The table-topping Sky Blues proved too clinical for the Roar who weren't without their chances and managed to carve a number of quality clear-cut chances.

The hosts weren't able to make the most of their opportunities with a first-half goal from Bobo, followed up by strikes from Adrian Mierzewjewski and David Carney in the second half, enough to see the visitors over the line.

Head Coach John Aloisi says it was Sydney's ability to make more of their chances that split the two sides.

“The difference between the teams tonight was at each end because I thought we did really well between the boxes," Aloisi said.

"We competed, created a lot of openings, but just lacked that goal to give us a lift. The young boys stepped up and played well and we’re disappointed to go away with nothing."

Young attacker Daniel Leck was promoted into the starting XI for the first time in his young career with Aloisi praising the contributions of the three teenagers in the Roar squad.

"The young players did very well against a quality side tonight – the future is bright here," Aloisi said.

The Roar now travel south to face the Jets at McDonald Jones Stadium on Friday night (6:50pm KO) before returning to Suncorp Stadium next Thursday night.

  • Daniel Leck made his maiden Hyundai A-League start when he became a late inclusion in place of Corey Gameiro & was one of three teenagers to take the field for the home side along with Dane Ingham & Rahmat Akbari.
  • The Roar called Sydney keeper Andrew Redmayne into action a number of times, most notably for a strong save to deny Massimo Maccarone late in the first half.
  • The visitors had a goal disallowed during the second-half after Alex Brosque was found to be offside in the build-up.
  • Eric Bautheac made his first Hyundai A-League appearance since suffering an injury in December, coming on in place of Petros Skapetis in the second-half.

Sydney FC – Bobo 18' – 0-1
Milos Ninkovic fires a low ball across the face of goal which Bobo gets a boot to first, tapping in from point-blank range.

Sydney FC – Mierzejewski 50' – 0-2
The Sky Blues have a sustained period of possession in their attacking third & Adrian Mierzejewski is afforded the time to shoot before curling the ball inside the left post.

Sydney FC – Carney 86' – 0-3
The Roar scramble well to originally deny Alex Brosque from point-blank range but can't hold out the follow-up from David Carney.
