Roar downed by Wellington

Brisbane Roar’s pre-season unbeaten streak has come to an end losing 2-1 at the hands of Wellington Phoenix in Hamilton.

Brisbane Roar-s pre-season unbeaten streak has come to an end losing 2-1 at the hands of Wellington Phoenix in Hamilton.

Going into the match on the back of a strong run of good form, including a 2-0 win over Hyundai A-League new boys Melbourne Heart, Brisbane was brimming with confidence.

However riding on the wave of a football frenzy generated in New Zealand over the past six months, the Phoenix proved too strong on the day.

A well taken strike from the edge of the box by Paul Ifill on 17 minutes, after a stray pass from the Brisbane midfield, opened the scoring.

Eight minutes later Dylan McAllister unleashed a dipping shot from long range to double the lead.

Brisbane had to wait until 11 minutes from the end of the contest to claim some consolation in the match when a neat passing move ended at the feet of captain Matt McKay who put his shot into the bottom corner to round out the scoring in the game.

Brisbane next take on English Premier League side Everton at Suncorp on Saturday July 17 in the annual Queensland Roars Against Racism clash.

Tickets for the match against Everton are available through Ticketek on 13 2849 or by visiting the website by clicking here.
