Roar dominates Westfield Matildas camp

Brisbane Roar Women’s championship-winning season has paid dividends with an impressive 11 members of Jeff Hopkins’ squad chosen in the first Westfield Matildas selection camp for the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Brisbane Roar Women-s championship-winning season has paid dividends with an impressive 11 members of Jeff Hopkins- squad chosen in the first Westfield Matildas selection camp for the FIFA Women-s World Cup.

The 33-player squad, which will be whittled down to 21 (18 outfield players and three goalkeepers) for the tournament in June this year, is dominated by Brisbane players and is justified reward for the club that beat Sydney FC 2-1 in this year-s Westfield W-League decider.

The camp will commence tomorrow at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra and is just the first in a series of camps that will determine the squad who will to travel to Germany for the FIFA Women-s World Cup.

Westfield Matildas Head Coach Tom Sermanni said the high standard of the recently-concluded Westfield W-League season played a large role in his selection process.

“All of these players have just been through a highly competitive Westfield W-League season,” he said.

“I-ve seen a lot of good things in the last four months and have brought in the players selected for this first camp on their performance throughout the season.”

The Westfield Matildas take on Brazil, Norway and Equatorial Guinea in their three Group D matches at the FIFA Women-s World Cup in June/July this year.
