Roar appoints David Abela as BRFC Academy Technical Director

David Abela

Brisbane Roar is pleased to announce it has appointed experienced coach educator and player development expert David Abela as Technical Director of the BRFC Academy.

Abela joins the Club on a part-time basis after spending three years as Head of the Coach Education Unit for the Football Association of Malaysia.

“This is an important appointment that solidifies Brisbane Roar’s ability to deliver the very best programs for young footballers in Queensland,” said A-League Head Coach Warren Moon.

“David has an immense amount of local knowledge and experience.

“He will be integral to ensuring that we as a club continue to deliver elite training standards for boys and girls in Queensland who aspire to play at the top level.

“As the only professional club in the state, we invest heavily in offering genuine opportunities for kids to reach the A-League or W-League. This is our passion. We share this with Football Queensland and will continue to support their pathways in harmony with everything the Roar delivers.”

Abela, who has previously served as Head Coach at the Queensland Academy of Sport and as State Technical Director for Football Queensland, will work across the BRFC Academy and in the community space through Roar’s Skill Training Centres (STCs).

“We want the Academy to be a player-centred Academy,” Abela said. “To do that we have to continually upskill the coaches in our Academy.

“We also want to improve our scouting and have exposure to regional areas to widen our talent identification, which we’ll do through the STCs.

“It’s about improving on what we’re currently doing and making sure we’re developing kids in the best way.”
