Report: New signings seal Roar’s FFA Cup progression past power

Brisbane Roar made a strong start to the new season as they progressed to the FFA Cup Round of 16 after overwhelming Peninsula Power 3-0 at Moreton Daily Stadium on Tuesday night.

It was a night for the debutants as Matti Steinmann, Luke Ivanovic, and Juan Lescano all hit the scoresheet to see the Roar through to the next stage.

Warren Moon’s men were in control for much of their first FFA Cup match in two years, commanding possession early and giving away very little at the back.

Brisbane took the lead after 19 minutes after Rahmat Akbari’s shot hit the post and rebounded kindly for midfielder Steinmann, who didn’t hesitate as he calmly stroked the ball past Power goalkeeper Phil Zabaks.

Ivanovic then doubled the Roar lead on 33 minutes as a beautiful long ball from Tom Aldred found the feet of Jack Hingert who put it on a dime for the striker to head home on his first competitive appearance for the Queensland club.

The night got even better for Brisbane late on as yet another debutant finished off the scoring, substitute Lescano calmly finishing a one-on-one opportunity in the 86th minute to cap a perfect night for the men in orange.

The Roar will now wait to discover their next FFA Cup opponents as preparations continue for the new campaign.

GOALS

Brisbane Roar – Matti Steinmann 19′ – 0-1

Steinmann was able to pounce after Akbari surged into the area and struck a shot against the upright. The German midfielder kept his cool over the rebound, tucking away with his left foot to open the scoring.

Brisbane Roar – Luke Ivanovic 33′ – 0-2

Ivanovic lurked at the back post to head home on his Brisbane debut and double the Roar’s advantage. A brilliant long pass from captain Aldred out to the right flank found the feet of Hingert on the righthand side, who measured a superb cross to tie together a fine move.

Brisbane Roar – Juan Lescano 87′ – 0-3

After harrying one defender into a mistake and darting past another, Lescano broke into a one-in-one position and looked cool under pressure as he calmly notched his first goal for the club with a neat finish inside the near post.
