PREVIEW: Roar take on Victory in a blockbuster Round of 32 clash

Midfielder Brett Holman insists Brisbane Roar are ready to go against fierce rivals Melbourne Victory in Wednesday night’s blockbuster Westfield FFA Cup clash, following “incredibly hard work” in the first month of pre-season.

After an intense start to the 2017/18 pre-season, John Aloisi’s side will head into the contest with positive momentum after back-to-back wins against Queensland Lions FC and Peninsular Power FC.

The Round of 32 match with Victory will be the first Cup meeting between the two Hyundai A-League giants, following its inception in 2014.

Holman says the side have prepared well and are focused on putting in a good performance and progressing through to the next round on Wednesday.

“We’ve worked incredibly hard during the first month, and the goal is to go out there and get a result against Victory,” Holman said.

“The Boss (John Aloisi) told us in the lead up to prepare like it’s a three-and-a-half-week pre-season before the Victory game because that’s when our season starts.

“It’s motivated all of us and driven the players to work so hard.”

Brisbane Roar and Melbourne Victory are two of the seven Hyundai A-League clubs left in the competition, following the eliminations of Perth Glory, Central Coast Mariners and Wellington Phoenix in the Round of 32.

A win would see the Roar join fellow Queensland sides Gold Coast City and Moreton Bay in the Round of 16.

“A prize is a prize, and it’s there to be won we are definitely up for the challenge, especially when you look at other results already where (Hyundai) A-League teams have been knocked out,” Holman added.

“We’ve had two pre-season games and the majority of players have got minutes, which has been fantastic.

“All the players are ready to go this is not a pre-season friendly; there’s a lot on the line.”

The highly anticipated cup-tie kicks off at 7:30 pm on Wednesday, 9 August at Perry Park, Bowen Hills. Tickets are selling fast and are available online now through www.eventopia.co.
