Postecoglou takes the reins

Brisbane Roar has appointed Ange Postecoglou as head coach in a deal that will see him lead the team until the end of the 2011-12 Hyundai A-League.

The appointment comes following the departure of Frank Farina earlier this week and ahead of Brisbane's clash against the Central Coast Mariners at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night.

Club Chairman Chris Bombolas said the appointment was a significant moment in the Roar-s short history and he was excited about the passion and skill Postecoglou would bring to the club.

“We are genuinely excited about the appointment and look forward to a bright future in a new chapter for the Roar,” Bombolas said.

Coaching duties for tomorrow night-s match will be left to assistant coach Rado Vidosic, with Postecoglou keen to make the transition as smooth as possible for the team.

“The reality of it is there-s a season to be played and we-re still very much amongst it,” the 44-year-old former Young Socceroos coach said.

“I-ve watched every game this season... so I know the Brisbane squad pretty well and they-re a very talented squad.

“Looking at it from the outside I think it-s a squad that capable of doing very well this year and beyond.”

Postecoglou, who led South Melbourne to back-to-back National Soccer League titles, said he was hoping to take over a winning team next week.

“If we lose tomorrow night I think people will legitimately turn around and say well it-s been a tough week, you don-t blame them,” he said.

“But on the other hand, you can rise to that challenge. I-m hoping the players embrace it like that.”

Postecoglou brings a wealth of coaching experience and success to the club, having won back-to-back NSL titles in the late ‘90s, before coaching the Australian U17 and U20 teams from 2000-2007.

The four-time Socceroo also had a brief stint at Greek club Panachaiki last year and has been a regular part of Fox Sports- football coverage.

Brisbane Roar-s match against the Mariners kicks off at 5.30pm, tomorrow night at Suncorp Stadium and is free for all kids under 15, when accompanied by a paying adult (details here).
