Penalty spot up for auction

The spot where Brisbane Roar converted four successful penalties in Sunday-s Hyundai A-League Grand Final will be auctioned on eBay in efforts to support the rebuilding of Queensland after the recent natural disasters.

Brisbane Roar fans have been given the opportunity to purchase the significant piece of Queensland football history after Sports Minister Phil Reeves announced the small section of the Suncorp Stadium pitch would be available on eBay from today.

“The spot at the northern end of the field from where the penalty shootout occurred in Sunday-s epic Hyundai A-League Grand Final will be removed,” Mr Reeves said.

“The piece of turf will be presented as a piece of memorabilia to help raise funds for the Premier-s Disaster Relief Appeal.”

Brisbane Roar came from two goals behind to snatch an equaliser late in extra time before prevailing 4-2 in a dramatic penalty shootout against Central Coast Mariners, giving them this season-s Hyundai A-League premiership and championship double.

With the opportunity to support the Premier-s Disaster Relief Appeal while securing one of the most unique pieces of memorabilia in the club-s history, Mr Reeves predicted a strong reaction from Queensland-s sporting public.

“Fans will have one week to bid and I expect there-ll be great interest in acquiring this unique memento from what was one of the greatest grand finals in Australian football history,” Mr Reeves said.

“They can bid knowing that if they are ultimately successful, the proceeds will go towards helping Queensland recover from the floods and Cyclone Yasi.”

The 38cm square piece of turf will be presented on a wooden base with a Perspex cover and will include a commemorative plaque and a Certificate of Authenticity.

In addition, the winner will receive a 2010/11 Hyundai A-League match ball signed by the grand final winning Brisbane Roar squad.

Bidders should be aware that the turf is natural product and to preserve it, it will need to be planted in the yard or a garden.

To bid, sports fans should go to www.ebay.com.au and search for ‘Suncorp Stadium Penalty Spot to Aid Disaster Victims’. Alternatively, search under the category of ‘Sports Memorabillia’.

Bidding will commence at midday today (Thursday 17 March) and will close at midday on Thursday 24 March.
