Our best is still to come: Taggart

Striker Adam Taggart says he’s firmly focused on putting in consistent performances and banging in more goals for Brisbane Roar.

A brace in the 2-0 win over Melbourne City on Saturday night, taking his season tally to five goals in as many games, has Taggart’s name squarely in discussion for a spot in the Caltex Socceroos squad for January’s AFC Asian Cup.

The number nine recognises the honour that would come with selection, but he insists that his full focus is with Brisbane Roar.

“It’s not really something I think about, you’ve got to focus on the right things like performing for Brisbane Roar,” Taggart said.

“I’m not going to be one of those people who say I should be in the Socceroos because the squad deserves a lot more respect than that.

“I’m here [in Brisbane] every day, pushing as hard as I can to be best player I can be.”

With slight injury concerns holding Brisbane’s number 9 back in previous seasons, Taggart is pleased to be on the pitch full time with the Roar and feeling in career best shape.

“My main goal this year was to stay on the park which hasn’t been possible the last few years,” Taggart added.

“I have all the confidence in the world with the staff we have at the club, from top to bottom, and I’m the fittest I’ve ever been.”

After tallying up three draws to begin the season, the Roar was certainly building to a breakthrough win, which came on Saturday night.

Brisbane were dominant across the park in a victory that Taggart believes his side’s performance justified, and he firmly believes that Brisbane still has plenty more to give.

“I still think there’s a lot more to come,” Taggart continued.

“We all know we’ve only shown glimpses of what we can do and there’s so much more to improve.

“At the end of the day it’s a great win but it’s also only one under the belt.”

The striker now turns his attention to Friday night’s clash against Adelaide United at Coopers Stadium – a venue he’s scored at twice in five trips.
