A new-look Brisbane Roar side is eager to make a strong start at Suncorp Stadium when they face Melbourne Victory on Friday in the season’s home opener, according to midfielder Jay O’Shea.

After an opening round 1-1 draw to defending Premiers Perth Glory, and a second-round bye, the Roar are itching to assert themselves on the competition when they return to action at Suncorp Stadium.

Speaking to media, O’Shea says his side are looking to build on a promising performance in Perth with a strong showing at home.

“It was definitely a positive result – they [Perth Glory] won the league last year and I don’t think anyone gave us a chance so to go and get a point away from home is a great result for us,” O’Shea said.

“In any season your home form is massive, you need to be picking up wins at home and then any point away from home is a good one.

“Last week was a good point so if we can back it up with a positive three points that’s where you pick up your points through the season.”

O’Shea added that the squad won’t be affected with a 12-day turnaround between matches.

“We got a positive result away against Perth and we would have liked to play straight away but we’ll go into Friday night fresh after the rest of the teams played over the weekend,” O’Shea continued.

The fresh-faced Roar outfit will be fuelled by the first home game at Suncorp Stadium, which for many will be the first at the ground.

“There’s a lot of new faces here and it’s going to be an exciting game for a lot of us that haven’t been to Suncorp [Stadium] yet,” the Irish midfielder said.

“I’ve heard a lot of good things about the stadium so I’m looking forward to a good crowd under the lights on Friday.”

Friday night’s clash with the Victory will be the first chance for home fans to get a look at new Head Coach Robbie Fowler’s side in Hyundai A-League action and O’Shea wants to make it memorable.

“First impressions are going to be big. It would be nice for us to go out there, get a positive result and hopefully more members and big crowds coming back.”
