NEWS: Captain Matt McKay raring to go as new season approaches

Captain Matt McKay says his team are eager to get the 2017/18 Hyundai A-League season underway, as the Brisbane Roar squad prepare for an internal match at the members exclusive training session on Friday.

With just over a week until the Roar kick-off their campaign against Melbourne City at AAMI Park (6:50 pm KO), preparations are in the closing stages.

John Aloisi’s squad will enter the clash against City next week with positive momentum, following five pre-season wins that included a victory against 2016/17 Hyundai A-League champions Sydney FC.

Captain Matt McKay is raring to go ahead of the new season and says the members exclusive training session is an excellent opportunity for new players to get a feel of the pitch at Suncorp Stadium.

“We’re getting so close which is great. We’re away in round 1 and I know we will be ready next week to play against a good side at a quality stadium,” McKay said.

“We haven’t played at Suncorp since the Champions League last season so it will be a good familiarisation session for us but also great for the fans to get out and see what the new squad looks like.”

This will be the first time fans will see the Roar’s new recruits Massimo Maccarone, Fahid Ben Khalfallah, Corey Gameiro, Petros Skapetis and Mitch Oxborrow in action at Brisbane’s home ground.

Two-time Roar player of the year McKay insists his side are determined and hungry for more success.

“We want to be in the grand final and win trophies so we’ll approach the upcoming season positively and play our style of football,” McKay added.

“I think we will have our critics but results wise we’ve been pretty good the last couple of years. If we can execute our plan we have a good chance to go very far this season.

“There will be new challenges each week, home and away, and the test will be how well we can adapt against different teams.”

Gates will open at 3:00 pm at Friday’s member exclusive training session, with the internal 11 v 11 match to kick-off at 4:00 pm.

A signing session will take place following the completion of the session at 5:30 pm with the event finishing at 6:00 pm.
