Mulvey confirmed as Head Coach

Brisbane Roar Football Club has confirmed Mike Mulvey as Head Coach for the next two Hyundai A-League seasons.

Brisbane Roar Football Club has confirmed Mike Mulvey as Head Coach for the next two Hyundai A-League seasons.

Mulvey joined the Roar in December in an interim role and today-s announcement reinforces the stability and long-term vision of the club and their owners, the Bakrie Group.

“If you understand what he-s achieved behind the scenes, in the dressing room, the way he has scouted players, what he-s doing in terms of leadership structure and providing a really strong vision for the club, you-ll see there-s a lot of great work there,” General Manager Sean Dobson said.

“The owners felt it was time to bring that stability to the group.”

After the success of the club in their previous two Hyundai A-League seasons, Mulvey was the first to admit the achievements of the current campaign so far were not up to scratch but promised he would make changes for the betterment of the club and their supporters.

“We have a great group of fans that support the Brisbane Roar and there are great expectations now, that have come on the back of two Championships,” Mulvey said.

“You have to manage those expectations and the truth of the matter is we haven-t reached those levels this season, for one reason or another, but they will be addressed and there will be changes made.

“We need to be forthright in our assessment of what-s gone on and what will happen in the future.

“I know how to bring success to a place, I-ve done it in many places I-ve been before and we will build towards that and return Brisbane Roar where it was.”

Having taken over the role mid-season, Mulvey asked for patience and time when being judged on his success as a Head Coach.

“Brisbane Roar were in a similar situation a few years ago, there was a change in personnel, direction and in terms of style,” he said.

“We are having a little bit of a change now but my view is that there is a lot to look forward to and I-d like to ask the fans of Brisbane to stick by the club because I promise we-ll be endeavouring to return the club back to its rightful place.

“What I ask is that I-m judged in 12 months time with regards to a full pre-season, settling of my own squad and moving forward.”

Club captain Matt Smith, currently recovering from hip surgery, said the playing group had Mulvey-s full support.

“Today is a big step in terms of stability and moving forward for the club,” Smith said.

“Now we can focus on the last seven games of the season, then finals and know what direction we are heading in the next two years.

“We-ve definitely seen some positive changes since Mike took over two months ago.”

After returning from Thailand today, the Brisbane Roar squad is now preparing for Sunday-s Hyundai A-League fixture against Wellington Phoenix. Kick-off at Suncorp Stadium is at 4pm.
