The Westfield Matildas 4-1 win over Korea Republic at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday evening was extra special for Roar Women captain & long-serving defender Clare Polkinghorne.

The BRFC icon marshalled the backline as goals from Sam Kerr, Lisa De Vanna and Emily Gielnik saw the Westfield Matildas make it two from two in the Cup of Nations.

Sunday’s match was the first time Australia’s top women’s football side had played in Brisbane in almost five years, making the occasion one to relish for locally born and raised Polkinghorne.

“It’s always nice to play in Australia but when it’s your home town, it’s extra special in front of my family and friends — it doesn’t get much better,” Polkinghorne said post-match.

Sunday’s victory means the Westfield Matildas can claim the inaugural Cup of Nations crown with a win over Argentina on Wednesday night.

Polkinghorne said her side were remaining focused as they continued to gear up for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France.

“It’s always nice to get a couple of wins together but you need to back up game after game, going into major tournaments,” she continued.

“So that’s what we’re going to focus on — just recovering and making sure we’re in good shape come Wednesday.”

Australia’s clash with Argentina kicks off at 5pm (QLD time) at AAMI Park in Melbourne on Wednesday night.
