Jets take points in high-tempo affair

Brisbane Roar has gone down 1-0 to Newcastle Jets in a highly-entertaining clash at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday evening.

The clash was played at rapid speed with both sides creating regular clear-cut chances but just one found the back of the net as Joseph Champness' 79th minute strike proved to be the decisive blow.

In what was a highly-entertaining game for the neutral, Head Coach John Aloisi says the Roar just simply didn't make the most of their chances.

"The boys gave everything. It was good, attacking football from end-to-end but we just didn't capitalise on our chances," Aloisi said.

"I hope the fans enjoyed the football game. I know we want to be higher, but hopefully they saw what we're trying to do here.

"To create so many chances shows that we can play good football, it's just disappointing we didn't make the most of them."

The result sees the Roar remain four points outside the top six with six rounds remaining.

Jamie Young was named as Man of the Match after making an impressive string of saves to consistently deny the Jets, and the in-form keeper says the squad are disappointed in the result.

"We're all devastated to not have taken anything from today's game. We played well enough to take all three points and the boys showed great character today," Young said.

The Roar return to Suncorp Stadium next Saturday night to take on Adelaide United (6:50pm KO).

  • The Roar created the better of the first half chances, with two of the best falling to Ivan Franjic and Brett Holman in the dying stages of the opening stanza.
  • Both sides tested the respective goals throughout the first period and the second began in similar fashion with both keepers being forced into action to deny an opening goal.
  • Fan favourite Henrique was thrown into the action in the 72nd minute and almost made an immediate impact, breaking through on goal before the chance faded away.
  • A 79th-minute strike from Joseph Champness proved to be the crucial blow, as the visitors took the points.
