Highlights: Roar return to winning ways in Newcastle

Rahmat Akbari

Brisbane Roar bounced back to winning ways with a gritty 2-1 triumph over Newcastle Jets at McDonald Jones Stadium on Friday night.

Deflected strikes from Alex Parsons and Jay O’Shea either side of half-time earned Warren Moon’s men a valuable victory and moved them three points clear of seventh-placed Western Sydney Wanderers.

An own goal on the hour briefly brought Newcastle back into the contest but Brisbane were the better side for long periods and fully deserved O’Shea’s 73rd-minute winner.

The Roar will look to take their momentum into Tuesday night’s clash with Melbourne City, the first of the Club’s three remaining matches at Moreton Daily Stadium amid The Run Home.

GOALS

Brisbane Roar – Danzaki 34′ – 0-1

Wenzel-Halls cuts the ball back into a dangerous area and it breaks for Parsons on the edge of the box. The midfielder’s first-time strike clips Danzaki’s heel and squirms into the bottom right corner.

Newcastle Jets – OG 61′ – 1-1

The Jets find a fortuitous leveller as Ramy Najjarine’s corner skims off a Roar head in a crowded area and flies into the net.

Brisbane Roar – O’Shea 73′ – 1-2

Brown cleverly guides his corner to O’Shea, who is lurking just outside the box. The Irishman controls with his first touch and uses his second to fire in a left-footed effort, which deflects off a defender and wrong-foots Jack Duncan.
