Griffin the McMaster of his own destiny

Brisbane goalkeeper Griffin McMaster wants to do the club - and himself - a big favour on Saturday by keeping a clean sheet against a potent Gold Coast United outfit in the Boxing Day derby at Skilled park.

With points and pride already on the line, the Roar shot-stopper has even more motivation to put on a good performance as he looks to dig his heels in between the posts following the departure of Liam Reddy.

With his current deal due to expire at the end of the season, McMaster said Saturday-s game was a big occasion both for himself and the team.

“It-s a fixture that we-ve earmarked since the start of the year and it looms as one of the biggest games of the season for us,” he said.

“It-s a very important time for me. I want to go out and really prove that I can be a number one goalkeeper in the A-League and I want to be the future of the club as well.

“I know I-m not the complete package yet but I-m working hard on the training paddock to make sure I become that.”

The match will provide a big test for the 26-year-old, with the opposition boasting the league-s leading goalscorer in Shane Smeltz, supported by a number of handy providers.

But McMaster said last week-s clean sheet against North Queensland Fury was proof the Roar were capable of shutting down the best in the business.

“We gave (Robbie) Fowler no space in the Fury game and it-s no different to the Gold Coast,” he said. “Shane Smeltz is very potent, so is (Jason) Culina.

“(Charlie) Miller is good too, then you-ve got Milson and (Joel) Porter so they-ve got some very threatening players and we-re going to have to be at our best.

“It-s a huge confidence booster winning the last couple of games and obviously we want to carry that into the game this Saturday.”

Saturday-s derby match kicks off at 5pm at Skilled Park, Robina (tickets here) and will be broadcast live on Fox Sports 2.
