Finals chances on the line for Roar Women

Back-to-back Westfield W-League victories will be the target for Brisbane Roar Women when they clash with Newcastle Jets on Sunday afternoon.

Following a dominant 3-0 victory over Western Sydney Wanderers, the Roar Women travel to McDonald Jones Stadium searching for another three points as the end of the season nears.

The Roar currently sit in fifth position, one point off a finals spot. Two spots have already been sown up by opposition sides meaning the three points up for grabs this weekend is vital.

Experienced midfielder Tameka Butt knows all to well what the game against Newcastle means.

“I think this part of the season is pretty critical for us,” Butt said.

“We need nothing less than three points and I think that’s the same for Newcastle so it’s going to be a pretty big battle between the two of us."

The last encounter between the Roar Women and Jets was in Round 14 last season where it ended in a scoreless draw, a result which secured a finals berth for Brisbane.

The Jets currently sit in seventh and despite going without a win since Round Three, still hold a slight chance of playing in the post-season.

“I think we need to watch their internationals. They're fighting for the same points we are,” Butt said.

“We definitely take them as a top-of-the-ladder team just like anyone else.”

The clash before Hyundai A-League action in Newcastle is the fourth double header for the Brisbane Roar this season.

“I think every double header is exciting. To play before the men and get that same atmosphere is a great feeling,” Butt said.

Following Sunday's away clash against the Jets, Brisbane Roar Women will face Melbourne City at C.B. Smith Reserve on Sunday, 22 January in their last match of the Westfield W-League regular season.
