Brisbane Roar Youth have dug deep to secure a 2-2 derby draw, coming from two goals down to take a point from rivals Gold Coast United at Goodwin Park.

In true football parlance, it was a game of two halves as the away side controlled the first half while the Roar dominated the second stanza with honours shared in the first Queensland National Youth League derby.

The young Roar squad was rocked after just six minutes when Gold Coast first team striker Andrew Barasic opened the scoring.

A seemingly innocuous through ball by Chris Harold became more dangerous when Brisbane goalkeeper Luke Muir slipped and despite some covering defence Barasic was able to slot the ball home.

Muir again was in the spotlight three minutes later when he was unable to deal with a well struck Barasic as the Gold Coast striker doubled the lead.

The Roar youngsters, to their credit, didn-t drop their heads and Josh McVey was soon threatening the Gold Coast goal steering the ball goalwards from an Antony Schiavo cross, but Coast keeper Jerrad Tyson was equal to the task.

Matt Osman very nearly had Gold Coast further in front on 18 minutes when the Roar allowed a ball to run across the box to the far post, but the midfielder was unable to keep his shot down.

James Brown was next to look to extend the lead with a shot from outside of the box as the Roar struggled to stamp any authority on the match in breezy conditions.

As the half drew to a close Brisbane began to work themselves back in the game with some sustained pressure in the Gold Coast defensive third, but were unable to find a way through the white shirted defence.

Muir made a vital stop just prior to the break when some slack marking allowed Harold to receive the ball in the box with no pressure and at the second attempted shot forced the Brisbane goalkeeper into a good stop.

Andrew Packer made way for Stefan Vrbesic after break as the first team defender works his way back to full fitness following his adductor injury suffered in Round 1 against Gold Coast at Suncorp Stadium.

Roar were back into the contest on 53 minutes when Josh McVey latched onto a precise through ball, rounded the keeper and slid the ball over the line despite a desperate attempted goal line clearance from Gold Coast-s Benjamin Wearing.

McVey very nearly doubled his tally minutes later when he pounced on a defensive error by Steven Lustica with only a fingertip save from Jerrad Tyson keeping his dipping volley out of the net.

McVey again was in the thick of the action on 70 minutes when he seemed set for his second goal of the game.

Good pressuring work by Matthew Byrne led to a mix-up between Zachary Anderson and Tyson, the ball falling to McVey but a desperate lunge by substitute Steven Topalovic stopped his shot from crossing the line.

Finally the Roar were level after 77 minutes when McVey released Jordan Farina down the right of the park and despite a hand from Tyson the strong shot found its way into the goal.

Farina went searching for the match winner minutes later with an audacious shot from 25m that had Tyson scrambling as it whistled past the post.

With five minutes to go Roar turned the screws on the away side as Brattan and Antony Schiavo both went close to securing the points for the home side

Both sides had scrambled efforts in stoppage time to win the match but in the end had to settle for a well-earned point each.
