Champness firing ahead of A-League return

Wenzel-Halls, Champness

New recruit Joey Champness has praised the comradery among the Roar’s front line on the eve of a fresh A-League campaign.

The 23-year-old is working himself into fine form during pre-season, combining well with his new teammates and scoring an impressive hat-trick in last Saturday’s 5-2 win over the NPL QLD All-Stars.

All three goals came in a dominant first-half attacking display from the Roar, which Champness hopes is a sign of things to come.

“We slowly got into our rhythm and from there we were able to play our game and working on the style of things we want to bring in to the season,” Champness said.

“We want to score goals and it was a positive performance from the boys – another step forward.

“There’s room for improvement, but that’s what it’s all about – building into the season and being ready for Round 1.

Scott McDonald also found the net twice to round out the first-half scoring.

Less than three weeks remain before the Roar’s opening round fixture against the Wellington Phoenix at Dolphin Stadium on December 27.

Champness praised his teammates and said everyone is working alongside each other to have the squad primed for the opening rounds.

“We’re all there to help each other. We’ve got great players in this squad & we’re all pushing each other to be better week-in, week-out,” Champness added.

The Roar continue pre-season preparations this Saturday with the first interstate trip of the new campaign – a road trip south to Coffs Harbour to face the Jets on Saturday afternoon (4pm KO QLD time, 5pm KO local). Get your tickets HERE.

Three of the Roar’s opening four fixtures are on home turf at Dolphin Stadium with fixtures against Sydney FC on January 10 & Central Coast Mariners on January 15 to follow the opening round clash with the Nix.
