Brisbane’s fab four in Olyroos

Brisbane Roar young guns Luke Brattan, Luke DeVere, Mitch Nichols and Andrew Redmayne have been selected in the Qantas Olyroos squad to compete at the Four Nations Tournament in Vietnam next week.

Brisbane Roar young guns Luke Brattan, Luke DeVere, Mitch Nichols and Andrew Redmayne have been selected in the Qantas Olyroos squad to compete at the Four Nations Tournament in Vietnam next week.

The four players were chosen by head coach Aurelio Vidmar in the 20 player squad that will compete against the Under 23 national teams of DPR Korea and Kuwait, as well as the Vietnamese national team.

The squad will assemble in Sydney on Wednesday for a two day training camp before leaving for Vietnam on Friday 17 September.

Defender DeVere and midfielder Nichols will be home in time for next week-s clash against Melbourne Heart but all four will miss out on Saturday-s home game against Adelaide United.

Today-s squad is Vidmar-s first since he was appointed coach of the Qantas Olyroos in June, and will be an opportunity for the players to familiarise before qualifying for the 2012 London Olympic Games begins in February next year.

DeVere, Nichols and Redmayne were all part of the Qantas Young Socceroos squad that competed at the U20 FIFA World Cup in Egypt last year, while Brattan has also represented Australia at the U20 level eight times.

Goalkeeper Redmayne said he was looking forward to the tournament, and was happy to have such a strong Roar contingent in the squad.

“I-m pretty excited to be going to Vietnam, it-s an opportunity for me to get some games and it-ll be great to be back with the boys after the World Cup last year,” he said.

“We have a lot of good, young players so it-s a credit to the club and a credit to the boys for doing so well and getting picked.”

Redmayne said he-d do his best at training to help his chances of playing between the posts.

“Jerrad Tyson from the Gold Coast is in the squad too, he-ll definitely keep me on my toes but I-m hoping to get some game time too,” he said.

The Qantas Olyroos play DPR Korea U23 on Monday September 20, before taking on Kuwait U23 on the following Wednesday. Their final game against Vietnam is on Friday 24 September. For more information regarding the tournament, please visit www.vff.org.vn
