BRFC Academy officially launches
Months and months of hard work came to fruition on Monday, 22 January as the Brisbane Football Club Academy officially launched.
It was the opening of the newest pathway to the Hyundai A-League for talented Queensland footballers with the Academy to feature six sides, beginning at Under 13s through to the current Youth side, the Under 19 squad, who will play in the upcoming National Premier Leagues (NPL) Queensland Men’s competition.
“The academy is our entry into youth development. It’s the first time Brisbane Roar has taken ownership over the development of players, which has been done fantastically well by NPL clubs up until this point,” Academy Director Drew Sherman said.
“All our players are from a variety of backgrounds, we start our program at Under 13s and we go through to Under 19s – our current Youth team.
“The players have come out of church football, NPL clubs, as well as QPL and BPL clubs and we think that we have selected the best available players in Queensland.
“We’ll now be looking to develop them over a period of years – we have put together a full-time coaching team to do that.”
The Academy, which is anticipated will produce the next generation of Brisbane Roar stars is free for all BRFC Academy players.
“If you’re talking about investing in talented players, then you need to do just that and invest in them. For us, the key focus of our business model is engaging more kids in football, making positive experiences and ultimately investing in what we believe will the right thing to develop players,” Sherman concluded.
The six teams, all of whom will play in various National Premier League Queensland competitions this season, will train four times per week on the state-of-the-art artificial surface at the QUT Kelvin Grove campus.
