Big Mac ready to fire against Mariners

Brisbane Italian marquee striker Massimo Maccarone says Saturday’s incredible comeback against the Phoenix was a great confidence boost for the Roar.

Maccarone bagged his first Hyundai A-League brace with a goal in the shadows of half-time and another later from the penalty spot which drew the Roar level after trailing 3-0.

The Italian, whose season tally is now up to three goals in four matches, says a dominant second-half from the Roar has buoyed the team’s confidence.

“It was a difficult game because we didn’t start very well,” Maccarone said.

“It was important [the comeback] because it will help our confidence. We are a good team, we just need some confidence and we can go on a run.

“It helped that we scored before half-time. In the second-half, we did very well and played good football and we believe we can win this week."

The next challenge for the Roar is the Gosford-based Central Coast Mariners at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday afternoon (4pm KO).

The match will take place directly following the Roar’s Westfield W-League clash with Perth Glory which kicks off at 1:30pm.

Brisbane is in the middle of their longest-ever winning streak against one side and will be searching for a ninth consecutive victory against the Mariners.

Central Coast haven’t enjoyed recent trips to Brisbane with the Roar netting 17 goals in their last four meetings at Suncorp Stadium and our potent Italian is keen to score a few more.

“We try to do our best every week. We want to win this game, we have respect for the Mariners, but we have to focus on ourselves and we want to win,” he added.

The Italian has now played two games alongside new French recruit Eric Bautheac and is impressed with the former Ligue 1 attacker but says he will only get better with time.

“He is a quality player. I saw him play before he came to Brisbane and I have played with him now. He is good quality and will get better with time,” Maccarone concluded.
