Brisbane Roar continued its strong support for the Big Issue Street Soccer program on Thursday as Sergio van Dijk represented the club at the Brisbane region-s awards night.

The program, which aims to improve the lives of the homeless and long-term unemployed through football, celebrated the achievements of all the players over the past year with a dinner at South Bank.

Van Dijk presented each player with their end of season pack and gave an inspirational speech about staying motivated during tough times.

The Brisbane striker reflected on his experience in football to demonstrate how hard work and an upbeat attitude are key tools in getting out of a rut.

He then accepted a community spirit award from the program on behalf of the club for its strong support over the past year.

Players and volunteers were also guests of honour at the match against Wellington on Sunday, with coach Jordan Bruce speaking on the big screen before kick-off.
